Singing is a powerful force, one that every human has a natural birthright to, whilst singing with others is infinitely good for us. Totnes Harmony Choir exists to celebrate this through gorgeous four-part vocal harmonies.
We are an auditioned choir open to anyone aged 18+. We rehearse weekly on a Wednesday evening from 6:30pm - 8:45pm at the Catholic Church in Totnes. We are also a community who meet socially, perform in concerts and have fun together.
Combining focus with fun, we sing all sorts of songs from pop and folk classics to world music, chorales and delicate mantras. We learn songs by ear, taught by our director Ruairi Edwards in rehearsals. You don't need to read music, although we do use sheet music for many of our songs. Music tracks are available for members to practise at home.
The essence of this choir is to develop the capacity of each individual voice to expand and resonate, to then bring those voices together into a collective blend that is powerful, joyful and endlessly satisfying.
Who (and why) we are
Meet our Musical Director - Ruairi Edwards
It is hard to capture the essence of Ruairi in words. Heart-led musician; alchemist, infectious tour-de-force, Ruairi Edwards is a nationally sought-after conductor, pianist and vocal coach who works across the UK and internationally, supporting and empowering people to find their voice and to find harmony.
Former vocal coach and pianist alongside Gareth Malone for the BBC’s BAFTA award-winning The Choir (2012-2014), Ruairi has developed a reputation for bringing joy, passion and a natural love of singing to all of the people and organisations he works with.
A core member of some of the country’s most prestigious choral organisations - including Ex Cathedra and National Children’s Choir of Great Britain - Ruairi works with everyone and everything from experienced chamber choirs and orchestras through to massed choruses of 400+ children; from corporate settings to local communities.
His infectious love of music and genuine commitment to each member of the choir results in a hugely powerful and transformative group-singing experience that is both a joy to listen to and be a part of.
